Stopping Child Marriage

Introduction

Anitha (Name changed), Female, 15 years old, Jamkhandi.

Anitha, a 15 years old child of daily wage workers, lives in Jamakhandi taluk, Bagalkot Dist. The family of five is economically unstable and belongs to BPL. As a regular at the Children Activity Centre (CAC), Anitha’s whereabouts were known to the facilitators and when they came to know that Anitha’s parents were arranging her marriage, the message was passed on to the project team and the Child Protection Committee (CPP), who stopped the marriage with the help of Childline (1098). The 15 year old girl is now a regular at school. The children and SHG women of the village are regularly trained on child rights, the ill effects of child marriages and its implications.
